Although few people seem to be aware of this fact, something quite impressive was discovered at the beginning of this year. We’ve discovered such planets before, but this is one of the few.
According to Canterbury.ac.nz, astronomers at the University of Canterbury were able to find a rare new super-terrestrial planet as they approached the center of the galaxy. Even if we cannot visit this or a similar planet for a long time because science is not yet sufficiently advanced, it is important to be aware of its presence in order to move forward. This planet is comparable in size and orbit to our planet Earth, and for these reasons, it is really something fascinating.
The discovery of this planet was published in The Astronomical Journal in May of this year (2020), and it is very interesting for many reasons. It’s not easy to discover something like this, and the probability of finding something like this is one in a million. Only a small number of such planets have been discovered, and although we don’t know how many more there are, it is unlikely that there are many more.
The summary of the conclusions on this subject published in the above-mentioned journal is as follows:
We report on the analysis of the micro-licensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-0677. A small feature of the light curve of the event leads to the discovery that the lens is a star-planetary system. Although there are two degenerate solutions that could not be distinguished for this event, both lead to a similar mass ratio between the planet and the host. We performed a Bayesian analysis based on a galactic model to determine the properties of the system and to discover that the planet is a neutral super/underground with a mass of. The host star has a mass of. The expected separations for the internal and external solutions are au and au respectively. It is by far the weakest Δχ 2 of all the planets recorded with microlenses so far, a feature closely related to the fact that it is recorded mainly by a “descent” rather than a “rise”.
Although it may seem small to some, to those who know what such a thing means, it is monumental. It’s not something we find every day. Although it is closer to the center of the galaxy, it is still very present and could only be discovered with the help of a system of gravitational microlenses. The effort to find such a thing is truly fascinating.
